Google Myths Debunked

SEO misinformation is as rampant today as it ever was, and Google myths abound. How can website owners and business people get the SEO rankings they want from Google if the record isn’t set straight and nobody debunks the bunk?!

Let’s start with the biggest SEO whoppers and see if that doesn’t make things a whole lot easier to understand…

GOOGLE’S ALGORITHM CHANGES MAKE IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET GOOD RESULTS

Nope!  Over the past couple of years there have been major changes to Google’s algorithm (the program that decides what does and does not rank for specific keyword searches) but the actuality is a lot less drastic than some would have you know.

Google just keeps getting better and better and searching out what they’ve always said they were after all along:  Quality Unique Content

If you aren’t trying to fool Google, you will find what we did.  That as people trying to game Google’s algorithm lost their first page rankings your rankings will improve.  Provide quality content in user friendly formats and you will be rewarded.

LOCAL SEO IS NOW DONE WITH GENERIC MIRROR SITES CREATING LEADS

While this has become a very common business model being promoted widely to local business communities, this isn’t really SEO.  You would really have to call this SEM (search engine marketing) for lead generation.

Vendors offering this service are not building any value for your site.  As soon as the business owner stops paying for the service, the lead faucet is turned off.  Even worse, the money  that was spent has built value into a site that will now be contracted out to that businesses competitors.

This business model is now so prevalent that on a recent appointment for Peak Reputation’s SEO business, we found that the prospect had been pitched by ten different firms to provide lead generation via a mirror site.   Some business people are thinking that this is all that is now available in the local SEO market.  Not True!

IMPROPERLY IMPLEMENTED SEO IS DANGEROUS TO YOUR WEBSITE AND DOMAIN

Who hasn’t heard the horror stories about websites getting sandboxed by Google for anywhere from 6 months to 1 year?

We cry Horse Hockey!

Think about this realistically.  If it was really all that easy for a website to get “sandboxed” or put into some sort of SEO timeout, then competitors could do this at will and steal top rankings.

Google knows this and wouldn’t make it that easy for unscrupulous SEO mechanics and shady webmasters.  How do we know?

As reputable SEO professionals we test and measure all that we do, as well as what our competitors might do.

No blackhat tactic that we have tested has ever caused one of our test sites to get deindexed.  In one such test, link spamming software was set to create over 10,000 backlinks to the site with just one keyword as anchor text.  The result wasn’t improved SEO rank, but it also didn’t hurt other rankings on the site, nor did it result in any penalties from Google whatsoever.

In addition, when Google sent out notices that websites should “disavow” backlinks that may have been acquired through spam or other such “bad” backlinks it hurt these same test sites not at all to ignore such warnings.  Again, how could Google protect sites from being hurt by blackhat competitors?

Has SEO changed in the past couple of years?  It has, and as Search Engine Professionals, Peak Reputation welcomes these changes.  We believe in being very transparent as to what we do for our clients.  Exposing SEO misinformation in the market is good for business people and the SEO market as a whole.
